Sony Ericsson W980i Review
Sony Ericsson continues to blur the lines between MP3 music player and mobile phone with their new flagship Walkman branded handset, the W980i. Encased in their best clamshell design yet, this phone has a fantastic quality music player, a 3 megapixel camera and a few very unusual features!
Why You Should Buy It!
• The latest v3.0 Walkman software is packed with features and sounds fantastic.
• It’s a 3G phone with HSDPA support plus GPRS and EDGE.
• Enjoy wireless stereo music with A2DP Bluetooth.
• A built-in FM transmitter allows you to listen to any music stored on the W980i on any other radio device, making it perfect for the car!
• A 3 megapixel camera can be found on the rear and a small, video call lens is inside the clamshell.
Main Disadvantages
• The camera has no flash or autofocus, and the lens has been placed in such a way that holding the phone and not covering it with your finger is difficult.
• The 8GB of internal memory is plenty, but a MicroSD card slot for quick and easy file transfer would have been nice.
Music, Sweet Music!
Sony Ericsson Walkman phones have always sounded great, but the W980i takes them to a new level. The player supports the majority of file formats out there, it has Mega-Bass enhancement plus various sound tweaks and equaliser presets to make the most of what you’re listening too. The accelerometer is used for Shake Control where a flick of the wrist is all that’s needed to advance or shuffle tracks, and Sony Ericsson’s mood-based playlist generator named SensMe is fun too.
Cool Design
The piano black casing gives the W980i a touch of class and the touch sensitive buttons on the front panel give it a futuristic look. These buttons and the screen above it can be used to control the music player without opening the phone too. The phone also features an FM RDS radio, TrackID and overall the music player should return around 20 hours of playback before a recharge is needed!
Summary of the Sony Ericsson W980i
With everything you could want from a music player and phone combined, the W980i should prove to be a very popular handset. As the flagship of the Walkman range it has certainly staked its claim to this hallowed position, just like it should stake its claim to the top of your shopping list.
